Well for starters, just do a google on Balad Air Force Base and you will get plenty of hits that explain in more detail where it is, what it does, who is stationed there etc.

Here, let me start you off:

http://www.af.mil/photos/index.asp?page=3

If you knew anything about Logistics, you would realize the monumental effort it takes to support 150,000 troops (more or less) that are essentially at war. How would you do it? Would you just land in downtown Baghdad? Get everybody a hotel room in the Holiday Inn? Have em eat out at the Donner Kabob? Do you think the Iraq economy can support this kind off effort? Don’t you think that security it a number one issue and that is why Balad is 65 miles from Baghdad?

Because we have Balad does not mean we are planning to run Iraq for the sole purpose of playing games with the Chinese, Russian, and Indians etc.

What I find amazing is that you always manage to reduce everything down to one or two things and that solves that. What you should do is run for political office. You could do the following immediately: pull us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, open the borders totally, provide the world with free health care, solve world hunger. Clean the environment, get everyone a job in a green work place, and while you are at it, balance the budget.

Regarding why we are in Iraq, yes oil is an important part, but not the only part. Maybe just maybe we want a presence there because of the Israeli issue, the Iranian Issue, the fact that the entire Muslim world is about to explode. Maybe we have commitments to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Maybe this area has an important strategic interest because of access to the black sea via the Med. And that also has a lot to do with the Russian Fleet. Yep they still are on our dance card. I could give plenty of other reasons.

And if you can suggest an alternative source of information about what the US is actually doing in Iraq that we can all trust and believe in, then, please, trot it out. Perhaps, we could attend the White House briefings on the subject?

What, if I might ask, is a substantiated opinion?

Dennis,

This piece does not explain what the US is doing in Iraq! It merely posits some unsubstantiated opinion about what the US may or may not be doing in Iraq.
