The Archbishop of Canterbury has been widely criticised after he called for aspects of Islamic sharia law to be adopted in Britain.
Dr Rowan Williams said that it “seems inevitable” that elements of the Muslim law, such as divorce proceedings, would be incorporated into British legislation.
The Archbishop’s controversial stance has received widespread criticism from Christian and secular groups, the head of the equality watchdog, several high-profile Muslims and MPs from all parties.
Amid the storm of protest, Downing Street moved quickly to distance itself from the Archbishop’s remarks, insisting that British law would and should remain based on British values.
A spokesman for Mr Brown said: “Our general position is that sharia law cannot be used as a justification for committing breaches of English law, nor should the principles of sharia law be included in a civil court for resolving contractual disputes.

Mike, I am not against specific religions or political systems per se. I am against practices that I do not think are good for humanity and the biosphere.
Islam comes in for a lot of attention in this regard because they seem to be high on faith and low on reason – high on the idea that they are the chosen ones and everyone else are ignorant infidels – but then the same could be said for many Southern Baptists in the U.S. – or the more conservative threads in Judaism.
I do not think the world is big enough anymore for people who think they are absolutely right and others are flat wrong. So, I am opposed to the conservative religious right here in the US for the same reasons I am opposed to fundamentalist Islam.
I believe people should be allowed to have their cultural and religious beliefs so long as they are tolerant of each other’s beliefs and so long as they are considerate of the biosphere (which, after all, we all share and depend on).
I stand corrected. I remembered some articles you posted, but I did not remember you actually speaking out against Islam. I support your view point on both fronts.
We have had interesting discussion on much of this over the years, and I have expressed that my political thinking could be considered conservative; however, I do not support the Republican party anymore that I support the Democratic party. The reason is exactly as you have stated, it is corrupted by the very conservative religious right. Regrading Islam, I have stated that it is the worlds largest Cult. Some have argued against this, but if you follow how it is evolving you might understand my reasoning. A small example, in Iraq they are kidnapping small children, brain washing them and then sending them on suicide bombing missions. Many of the targets are other tribes who practice Islam differently. The posts you listed give numerous examples of the total mental and physical control that is used.
This would be OK, but they are now trying and in some cases successfully exporting this to Europe, and the USA. It is the silent invasion. Clausewitz stated, War is an extension of Politics by other means”. If the west does not wake up, they will be speaking Arabic, praying to the East 5 times a day. If you think it can’t happen, check out European history. It happened about 500 years ago and we are still feeling the results. That is what today’s Balkans war is all about. Serbs began with an expulsion of Ethnic Albanians (Who are Islamic). Well we put an end to that, didn’t we! Not so fast look at Kosovo. Independence is theirs right, not so fast, the Russians and Serbs are so excited about this at all. Same issue, Ethnic Albanians. Russia has also leveled Chechnya, why same issue. I hope New Zealand understands this, otherwise it will only be a matter of time. You can run but you can’t hide.
