– Someone here in New Zealand pointed out to me the other day that the United States is, perhaps, the only country in the world to stage a “World Series” and not invite any other countries to participate. It’s a point that’s been wryly appreciated by folks from outside the U.S. for some time.

It started in 1903 when American dominance was a function of military, industrial, economic strength. And … baseball was only played in the U.S. Thus, historically, the phrasing is appropriate. Given the many changes in 100+ years, perhaps the format and title might be changed, but — quite frankly — this does not fall ANYwhere on my priority list!
