New Zealand Trip

11 Dec 2003 - Fifth day at sea

Up at 0630.   Mostly cloudy.   There are squalls off in the distance and the decks are wet so it's rained.  Temperature's still in the mid seventies.

At 0706, we're at 9.46N and 141.09W.   We're getting close to the equator.   By tomorrow, I think we should cross it.   Encarta says that there are new ocean currents coming up.   The first runs east to west just above the equator and the next run just the opposite just below the equator.   I need to read again about the wind patterns - I've forgotten them.

It amazing that we're only traveling at 22 MPH but we just grind on day and night at that rate and we've covered a distance now farther than if we'd crossed the united states - coast to coast.

I'm dressed in shorts today for the first time.  I'm so used to levis that it feels strange to be without them.  But I've got some pretty white legs.   I'll let the reader sort out where the emphasis goes in that last gem of a sentence.

I took a walk to the bow today and filmed it with six 35 second QuickTime movies.  I've combined the six clips into one long clip which shows the whole walk.  The ship is over 600 feet long and this walk gives you a good idea of its size.

Or, for those with lots of bandwidth and/or patience, here's all six combined into one clip which is about 55MB in size and 3.5 minutes long.

QuickTime Movie - A Walk to the Bow

2330 - Just finished watching "Bend It Like Beckham".   Wow, what a great movie.   One of those that really makes you feel good.

Last night I tried two others and bounced off of both.  They were "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Kiss Me Kate".   I guess me and musicals just don't cut it together.

Nothing remarkable about today.   it was cloudy and rain squalls were around all day.   Nice though because they keep it cool.   We're going to cross the equator sometime this evening - may have already - I'll check in a few minutes.

2340 - just checked.   We're not over yet.   We're at 5.39N,  144.19W.  I looked up and Orion is straight up.   Looks odd there.   all my life it's been 50 or 60 degrees up from the horizon.

I've settled into a routine with programming and meals and watching a movie and working out and a shower in the evening.   I rather like it.
